Formulating a research design

Hi, I have just started my Ph.D. and the topic of my research is on “Multi-generational techniques for encouraging the consumption of green products among consumers of all generations”. My advisor has asked me to build a research design for my topic. She explained all the concepts that are incorporated in the design, but what I don’t understand is how to write it!! See, I know what the research methodology is, but what approach should I use? I am reading all these research papers and honestly, they are just mind boggling. And what if, I implemented some research method, but that proves to be wrong at the later stage of my study. What will I do then? I mean how can I decide now what is best for my study when I have just started. Isn’t it supposed to come in the end, you know, when you have already implemented the strategies and research methods? This all looks kind of scary to me, I really don’t understand how to broach this subject. I would really appreciate it if someone could give me advice on how I can build a good research design (hopefully the one which won’t be rejected).
